Pastoral Letter
|
|
Dear Church Family,
Periods of evaluation are so helpful for accountability and
improvement. Last time, I mentioned that the
Big Conversation meeting would be taking
place at Newbold College on Sunday, the 19th of October. The
intention was for the membership of the churches, who sent
delegates to represent them, to review the progress of the
South England Conference (SEC) halfway through our term of
Office and share feedback that will inform us for the
remainder of this term and beyond. As we strive to serve, it
was great to receive the comments about the event below.
Some remarked that it was “excellent”, “has never been
done”, and “brave of the SEC administration putting this
on”, and another participant even remarked that it was worth
their journey coming all the way from Cornwall to be part of
the Big Conversation. Others said the event was “Spiritually
directed,” that the “atmosphere was beautiful,” and that the
way it was conducted was excellent.
I was pleased to see young people taking part so well and
hear stories of what churches have been doing within the
Conference. For example, mentoring groups, shadowing
leaders, and engaging in entrepreneurial exercises are
organised for young people, some of whom are starting their
own businesses. Discussions regarding understanding the
broader culture, constructively working in the community,
and inviting them to smaller spaces rather than Churches
when the whole congregation are present. We heard some ideas
about interacting with the community on how to reach
indigenous British people, including a radical idea: going
to places they are happy to frequent, such as football
matches.
This provided plenty of food for ongoing thought, and I will
share more about the aspects that will be implemented as a
result of the Big Conversation. In the meantime, how can we
all improve our ministry in our local churches and wider
communities?
I want to thank all those involved in organising the event
and all who took part. It was a day well spent, and we hope
to have another one. Let’s keep our church, its purpose and
the glory of our soon-coming King in view.

“This was a visionary event, inspired by the Holy
Spirit… anyone who missed this, you must come to the
next one. It was informative, inspirational and exactly what
you need to move into the future of media and
communication” remarked Cynthia Osei Owusu-Arthur, HR
professional and presenter of the IN2G show, produced by the
British Union Conference (BUC). Her sentiments captured the
buzz and enthusiasm of the recent
connectED25: Faith, Tech and the Future of Outreach conference, a collaborative venture by the Media and
Communication department of the South England Conference
(SEC) and the Newbold College of Higher Education, held on
Sunday, 12 October.
