PRESIDENTIAL
PASTORAL LETTER
Dear friends,

Greetings from the South England Conference.

"Christ's method alone will bring true success in reaching the people" (Ellen G. White). This strategy was embraced and demonstrated by The Hub Church Plant on Sunday, July 3. My secretary, who attends the Hub, shared her experience:

“On Sunday 3rd, July 2022, The Hub had its first Community Fun Day at the Holywell Primary School in Watford. Our theme is Making Disciples: Building Communities.

The Hub's vision is to reach out and meet the community's needs. It was felt that the Fun Day would be an excellent opportunity to introduce ourselves and interact with the community and form relationships and put on an event that would be enjoyable for all the family. With the increased cost of living, we needed to make the event FREE for all and with the addition of various funding, it was possible to achieve this. Music from a local band went down well, and various entertainments for kids such as inflatable bumper car rides, inflatable bouncy castles with surf simulators & rush slides. There was a kid's bubbles entertainer that went down very well, a real-life fire engine and a kids’ football match. Various stalls were made available to the community at no cost. The Holywell School PTA had one of the stalls, which was a real success. The Hub also had its stall to tell them what we were about. Various literature was made available, and information to share with the community about our plans for the future. One is a community choir enrolment and an invitation to our Praise & Worship Day.

We also had contact numbers to follow up with interest as to who we were. We also gave out information about our commitment to helping local families by providing food parcels. Two of the local councillors who were encouraged by our fun day said next time, let them know so they can help us, whether financially or just being on the council for information. The SEC Health Ministries team, run by Millie Williams, also had a stall where blood pressure was taken. The health team were able to provide services for 35-40 people and discovered that high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes and obesity were the significant challenges in that community. The plan is now to address these areas through lectures, fitness sessions and cooking classes.

It would be fair to say that the day was a real success, with approximately 500 people attending the event. Some of the comments were: ‘Where can you go these days and get entertainment and good food all for free?’; ‘I remember the days when growing up, there was a much stronger community spirit, and somewhere along the way, it's been lost. We need that community spirit back together’; ‘Hope this isn't a one-off event’.

Praise God for making this day successful because, without Him, none of this would have been possible. The work in the Holywell community has only just begun, but we are excited and entirely up for the challenge!”

Friends, across our Conference, our congregations are embracing this strategy and engaging with their communities. As we minister to their needs and win their confidence, we are then able to invite them to join our Discovery Bible Reading and allow the Holy Spirit to work upon their hearts and bring conviction. Making Disciples: Building Communities is what the SEC is doing. Please join the many congregations who have caught this vision and are reaching out to share Jesus in their communities.

Kind regards,

British Army Veteran Turns Author – Felicia Glasgow & Latisha Sealys
On Sunday 26th June 2022, history was made when one of Portsmouth SDA Church's very own Jermila Sealys gave birth to her book entitled Letting the Pain Out. Jermila is a Grief Support Coach, Motivational Speaker, and NHS Nurse. She is a British Amy veteran with a BSc in Adult Nursing who took on the challenge to write her first book, Letting the Pain Out, after suffering pain, grief, and loss of loved ones through sudden death, for over six years. Losing her loved ones drove her to find the courage to step out of the dark hole of pain and grief and emerge with a new purpose, to live her life to her full God-given potential. Her latest book Letting the Pain Out, deals with coping with grief and reflects her approach to the pain of loss.

COMMUNICATOR
The Wedding Singer – Cathy Boldeau
When I’m composing, I will pray about it because I believe the inspiration comes from God. I then spend time with him to be in a particular mindset. I also spend time in reflection to write and be inspired to be able to handle a specific topic.

Vision, Focus, Integrity – Dr Dan Serb
Effective leadership anticipates trends rather than just responding to them; it peers into the future, foresees the big picture, and creates an environment for work (or ministry) that welcomes innovation.

Small Church BIG Impact – Pastor Wayne Erasmus & Pastor Max McKenzie-Cook
If you find yourself in one of the “small churches” (fewer than 100 members) across the South England Conference, you might be tempted to think that you are not measuring up, struggling too much, working hard, and making slow progress. But “small churches” outnumber larger ones within Adventism and across the Christian experience. “Small” is the most common experience, and it can be a wonderful, empowering, exciting, warm, and impactful one!

If you want to change up your “Small Church” experience for more significant impact, sign up for the “Small Church BIG Impact” Retreat presented by the Community Services and Church Growth Departments of the South England Conference. Held at the new Hay’s Wood Retreat Centre from 16 - 18 September 2022, this promises to be a weekend of fellowship, encouragement, affirmation, and support for small churches wanting to increase their mission and ministry impact!

ADVENTIST DISCOVERY CENTRE - FREEBIBLE, YOUR MISSION OPPORTUNITY
We all have ordered items online, a pizza or a book, dress, shoes, or electronic device. It was just another order for the guys at the warehouse; for the postman, it was just another delivery. But for you, for me, that box made the day!

Now, picture your neighbour or colleague at work waiting in anticipation for an item. And imagine that item was an Adventist (sponsored) product.

Picture your friend who, to get that product, went through a mini-series of Bible studies – the fundamental beliefs of your church. Even more, imagine the studies were done without the involvement of an evangelist, missionary, or pastor. The person did it all by herself, step by step.

Imagine the best part if you think that's farfetched: you are the postman for this order. You are, knocking on the door and delivering it to a smiling and surprised someone.

Over the last five years, several thousands of such deliveries have taken place. But something was missing in many of the cases. Any guesses? Let us introduce you to "FreeBible"! (What is FreeBible?)
